Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Several Areas of Kandy District
Kandy, Sri Lanka – June 3
Continuous heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has resulted in flooding in several low-lying areas of the Kandy District, affecting hundreds of families and disrupting transportation services.
According to local authorities, water levels in several tributaries of the Mahaweli River rose significantly following persistent showers brought by the southwest monsoon. Residents in parts of Gampola, Peradeniya, and Yatinuwara reported minor flooding of roads and residential properties.
The District Disaster Management Center stated that emergency response teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and provide assistance where necessary. Temporary shelters have been prepared for families who may need to evacuate if conditions worsen.
Several schools in affected areas reported delays in morning sessions due to difficulties faced by students and staff travelling through flooded roads. Public transport services also experienced disruptions, with some routes temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.
Meteorological officials have warned that further rainfall is expected over the coming days and have advised residents living near rivers and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant.
No casualties have been reported at the time of publication. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and urge the public to follow official safety instructions.
